EVA teak and the deck:
what to know

Call +39 380 173 0961Message us on WhatsApp

On the NAVY 4.80, NAVY 5.50, NAVY 6.00 and NAVY 7.60 RIBs the standard deck flooring is synthetic EVA foam teak: a material made of ethylene-vinyl acetate that reproduces the look of teak, lighter and softer than wood, stain-resistant and non-slip even when wet. It needs no oiling and no sanding: a rinse is enough. You choose from 24 shades, from T-01 to T-24. Solid natural teak, 8 to 12 mm thick, is a price-list option, and its price rises with the size of the RIB.

PLATE 02

The short answer

Synthetic or real:
what is on board

When people talk about “teak” on a RIB, they almost always mean two different things. One is synthetic teak, which imitates the wood and stands in for it in everyday use; the other is natural teak, the real wood, laid in planks. On the NAVY RIBs the first is standard and the second is your choice. That is why, whenever we talk about the flooring of our RIBs, we always write next to the word “teak” whether it is EVA or wood.

The deck of a RIB works harder than any other part of the boat: you step onto it with wet feet, walk on it barefoot, stretch out on it in the sun, rest the cool box and the anchor on it. It is the surface you touch most, and the one that costs you most time if it is wrong. The table below sets the two materials side by side, in the words of our catalogue and with the prices from our price list.

PLATE 03 — Chapter 02 · The material

What is
EVA teak

Ethylene-vinyl acetate · stain-resistant · non-slip

EVA stands for ethylene-vinyl acetate. EVA foam teak is a material designed for the marine environment that reproduces, with great fidelity, the warm and refined look of teak wood. We chose it for the decks of our RIBs because it combines the elegance of traditional teak with the practicality and lightness of a new material: from a distance you read wood, underfoot you feel the difference.

We list its advantages just as our catalogue does, one by one: it is lighter than wood, softer to the touch, completely non-slip even when wet and easier to maintain over time. In the price list, the standard-equipment entry adds one more: stain-resistant. It stands up to UV rays, salt and weather, the 3 things a deck meets every day of the summer.

There is one thing EVA does not do: it does not become wood. Anyone who wants real grain and the value of solid timber chooses natural teak, and we come to that later in this guide. For everyone else, EVA is the deck you use without giving it a thought.

At the bow the deck is full of interruptions: the locker lid, the stainless windlass with its chain, the pop-up cleat, the steps leading down to the cockpit. The teak-effect covering follows every one of them, piece by piece. This is where you can tell whether the laying has been done with care: the planks must run straight even where the surface beneath changes shape.

The swim platforms

Where you climb
out of the sea

The aft swim platforms, like the standard ones on the NAVY 7.60, are the wettest spot on the whole boat: you climb back onto them after a swim, barefoot, with the water still running off you. This is where “non-slip even when wet” stops being a catalogue phrase and becomes the thing that matters. On the black 7.60 in the photograph the planks have black caulking and the edge is gloss black fibreglass, and the covering runs right up to the corner.

Even what
you open

On the 7.60 in the photograph, the recess for the bathing ladder is closed by a lid that is also covered in teak effect: closed, the swim platform stays a single surface; open, it reveals the telescopic steel ladder folded away in its housing. On the white 7.60 the same goes for the bow locker lid, the one by the windlass in FIG. 03: the covering runs over what opens, too.

Between the console and the sunpad, the sole carries the engraved Naviglia Yachts logo with its compass rose. On the NAVY 6.00 in the photograph the EVA teak is grey, with dark grooves: proof that “teak”, here, is the name of a pattern and not just of a colour. The same logo also appears engraved in the honey-coloured covering, in FIG. 01 of this guide.

PLATE 05

The colour of the deck

24 shades,
one deck

EVA foam teak does not come in one colour only. Our sample card has 24, each identified by a code from T-01 to T-24, designed to go with the colour of the boat and the upholstery. In the first 20 shades the code pairs a plank colour with a caulking colour, the thin line that separates one plank from the next; the last 4 are patterns. The contrasting caulking lines are what draw the deck and give it its character.

On the sample card the shades fall into 4 families. We describe them in words because a screen never gives back the true colour of a material: the right shade is chosen in person, next to the tube fabric and the upholstery you have in mind.

  • Wood tones, 7 shades. From T-01 to T-06, plus T-17: planks in light teak, warm brown and mahogany, with black, white, cream or tone-on-tone golden caulking.
  • Greys and taupes, 11 shades. From T-07 to T-15, plus T-18 and T-19: from light grey to dark grey, through to taupe, with black, white or coloured caulking, from aqua green to blue to orange.
  • The blacks, 2 shades. T-16, a black plank with red caulking, and T-20, black on black: the boldest deck on the card.
  • The patterns, 4 shades. From T-21 to T-24, 4 camouflage patterns: light blue and blue; grey, white and dark blue; fine-grained green; sand and green.

FIG. 07 — On the white 7.60 the swim platform has light caulking and a white fibreglass edge. The grain of the covering can be read plank by plank; at the top, the cone of the tube.

White or black,
the deck changes

The same shade does not read the same way on two different boats. The hull, deck, aft platforms and console of the NAVY RIBs are in fibreglass, white or black, and the edge that frames the covering changes everything: on the white 7.60 the swim platform has light caulking and a white edge, on the black 7.60 black caulking and a gloss black edge. Factor in the tubes as well, with the 3 standard colours Notte Profonda, Pietra Bianca and Blu Navy, and the upholstery.

That is why the shade is decided during configuration, together with everything else: if you already have one in mind, send us the code and we will look at it on the model you have chosen.

PLATE 06 — Chapter 08 · The real wood

Natural teak,
when you want it

Solid timber 8 to 12 mm · laid by hand · optional

Natural teak is a noble hardwood of tropical origin, widely used in fine yachting. It has elegant grain and a warm, varied colour, from golden yellow to bronze, with slight reddish tints. Thanks to its natural oily resin it resists temperature swings, ageing, parasites, mould and fungi; it copes well with salt, water and humidity, and it does not warp. It also helps to keep the value of the boat high.

Our catalogue describes natural teak as laid in 4 layers. On the surface, solid teak 8 to 12 mm thick, with its natural non-slip finish. Beneath it, a polyurethane or epoxy marine adhesive, which holds the plank and stays flexible under vibration. Then a waterproofing layer, which seals the fibreglass against water ingress. Finally the substrate: on RIBs, preformed fibreglass panels integrated into the rigid structure. Every plank is selected, shaped and laid by hand, following the lines and curves of the boat.

In the price list, genuine natural teak wood flooring costs €3660 + VAT on the NAVY 4.80, €4676 on the NAVY 5.50, €5076 on the NAVY 6.00 and €6942 on the NAVY 7.60, always + VAT.

PLATE 09

Care and lifespan

One rinse,
and the deck is ready

The first thing to know about the deck is how to clean it. The answer is the very reason EVA is standard: unlike natural wood, it asks for no oiling, sanding or protective treatments. A simple rinse is enough to keep it clean and tidy. It is stain-resistant and stands up to UV rays, salt and weather: it is made to keep its looks with use.

  1. After a trip out, a rinse. That is all the routine maintenance EVA foam teak asks of you, as our catalogue puts it.
  2. No oil. Oiling is care for wood: EVA does not need it.
  3. No sandpaper. Sanding is a job for wood: the synthetic covering does not call for it.
  4. No protective treatments. Resistance to sun, salt and weather is already in the material.

And how long does it last? We will not give you a number of years, in all honesty: there is no figure that holds for everyone, because the life of a deck depends on how much sun it gets, where the boat is kept and how much you use it. Two identical RIBs, one under its cover and one on a mooring all summer, age differently. What we can tell you is what EVA does not ask of you, and you have just read it.

of every NAVY

Beneath the covering lies the deck itself. The hull, deck, aft platforms and console of the NAVY RIBs are in fibreglass with increased thicknesses, white or black. Our catalogue describes the fibreglass deck as a solid surface, UV-resistant and non-slip: teak, synthetic or natural, is laid on top, and adds comfort, looks and grip underfoot.

In the table you will find the standard flooring and the natural teak for every size in the range. On the NAVY 6.60 the specification sheet is being updated, and on the NAVY 9.50 Cabin the fit-out is defined together with the quote: for these 2 boats, ask us for the configuration and we will set it out for you item by item.

Questions about the deck

The deck,
in 8 answers

8 questions about teak, synthetic and natural, with the answers taken from our catalogue and our price list. One at a time: open one and the other closes.

What is EVA teak on a RIB?

EVA teak is a deck covering made of ethylene-vinyl acetate, a material developed for the marine environment that reproduces the look of teak wood. Compared with wood it is lighter and softer to the touch, stays non-slip even when wet and is stain-resistant. On the NAVY 4.80, NAVY 5.50, NAVY 6.00 and NAVY 7.60 RIBs it is the standard flooring.

Is the teak on NAVY RIBs real or synthetic?

On NAVY RIBs the standard teak is synthetic, in EVA foam, on the NAVY 4.80, NAVY 5.50, NAVY 6.00 and NAVY 7.60. Genuine natural teak wood flooring is a price-list option on these 4 models. For the NAVY 6.60 and the NAVY 9.50 Cabin the deck is defined on request, together with the quote.

How do you clean synthetic EVA teak on a RIB?

The synthetic EVA teak on a NAVY RIB is cleaned with a simple rinse. Unlike natural wood it asks for no oiling, sanding or protective treatments, because it is stain-resistant and stands up to UV rays, salt and weather. That is the main reason we fit it as standard: you use the deck, rinse it, and it is back in order.

How long does EVA teak last on the deck of a RIB?

We do not state the life of EVA teak on a RIB in years, because it depends on how much sun the deck gets, where the boat is kept and how much you use it. The material stands up to UV rays, salt and weather, and it is designed to keep its looks with use, without oiling or sanding.

Is EVA teak slippery when wet?

No: the EVA foam teak on NAVY RIBs is non-slip even when wet. Our catalogue describes it as completely non-slip even when wet, and in the price list the standard-equipment entry says stain-resistant and non-slip. That is why we also lay it on the aft swim platforms and on the steps, where you climb out of the sea with wet feet. Natural teak has a non-slip finish too, which comes from the wood itself.

How much does natural teak cost on a NAVY RIB?

In the price list, genuine natural teak wood flooring on a NAVY RIB costs €3660 + VAT on the NAVY 4.80, €4676 on the NAVY 5.50, €5076 on the NAVY 6.00 and €6942 on the NAVY 7.60, always + VAT. The price rises with the size of the RIB.

What colour can the EVA teak on the deck be?

The EVA teak on NAVY RIBs comes in 24 shades, from T-01 to T-24: wood tones, greys and taupes, 2 blacks and 4 camouflage patterns, with black, white or coloured caulking. In the plank shades the code pairs the colour of the plank with that of the caulking. The true colour is judged in person, next to the tubes and the upholstery you have chosen.

What is under the natural teak on a RIB?

According to our catalogue, there are 4 layers under the natural teak on a RIB. On the surface, solid teak 8 to 12 mm thick; beneath it, a polyurethane or epoxy marine adhesive, flexible under vibration; then a waterproofing layer that seals the fibreglass against water ingress; finally the substrate, that is, preformed fibreglass panels integrated into the rigid structure. Every plank is shaped and laid by hand.
